Abstraction is not just nature and architecture, organic and inorganic. It is identity. Each painting is a record of who you are and how your ideas evolve. Abstraction is about being bold and stepping up to the idea of the unknown or possible failure. It's the process of exploring the substance of each individual painting. When the painter abandons any and all of the assumptions and preconceived notions they might have about abstract painting, only then will their ideas begin to evolve from the work. It is a process of pushing and pulling, taking the idea and the work too far, making the mistake, turning the relevant into the irrelevant and then back again.

In my mind, true abstraction is a challenge to all our perceptions and it is how I experience the world. Regardless of this, I choose to paint toward those unknown ideas that reflect my experiences, while ignoring the obvious. From Mondrian's idea of painting to "ask big baffling questions" to David Smith's abandonment of the subject, abstraction is relevant to all of us who believe in it. My approach then, is to embody these ideas of true abstraction as an abstract painter instead of just painting abstractly.
